Overview
For memberships that issue passes with credits, Punchpass lets you allow unused credits to carry forward — or "roll over" — into a customer's next membership cycle instead of being lost when the period ends.
This guide explains how rollover credits are calculated, how the rollover cycle setting works, and what happens when you change or turn off rollover on an existing membership.

How Rollover Credits Are Calculated
There are two core concepts about how memberships can work in Punchpass:
Whether credits roll over at all, controlled by the "Do credits rollover from previous cycles?" checkbox.
How long those rolled-over credits stay available, which is controlled by the selected number of rollover cycles (1–6 cycles, or "credits never expire"). This setting doesn't change how credits are tracked; it only determines how many future membership cycles those rollover credits remain available before they expire.
An Example Rollover Scenario
A membership that includes 5 credits per month, with rollover turned on.
Month | What happens |
Month 1 | The member uses 3 of their 5 credits. 2 credits roll over. |
Month 2 | The member now has 7 available credits (2 rollover + 5 new). |
End of Month 2 | With a 1-cycle rollover setting, those 2 rollover credits expire if unused. |
Choosing up to 6 cycles allows rollover credits to remain available for up to six future membership cycles before they expire. You can also choose "credits never expire" if you don't want rollover credits to have a time limit.
Where the Membership Rollover Setting Lives
When creating a new membership: check Do credits rollover from previous cycles? and choose how many cycles rollover credits remain available.
When editing an existing membership: the same option appears in Manage Passes > [membership name] > Actions > Edit.
Rollover Credits and Free Trials
If a membership offers a free trial, unused credits earned during the trial will not roll over once the trial ends.
How Rollover Credits Appear
When credits roll over, Punchpass automatically adds a note to the customer's pass on the admin side explaining how many credits rolled over from the previous cycle, for example, "Punchpass wrote: 2 visits rolled over from the previous cycle."
A customer's view will show the total number of credits available for the current pass.

When Changes to Memberships Take Effect
Any change you make to the rollover setting, such as turning it on/off or adjusting the number of cycles, applies to new membership passes created after the change. It does not retroactively affect passes that have already been issued.
What Happens If You Turn Off Rollover on an Active Membership
Turning off rollover doesn't strip away credits a customer has already accumulated, it just stops the carry-forward going forward from that point.
Example:
A customer has a 5-class pass with 7 available credits (5 standard + 2 rolled over from a previous cycle).
You edit the membership to turn off rollover credits.
When the membership renews, the new pass still starts with those 7 carried-over credits, plus the 5 new credits for the period.
From that pass onward, unused credits will no longer roll over, since the feature is now off for new passes.
In short: the change applies at the next pass created, not retroactively to credits already on an active pass.
